King Tut Exhibit Inspires Questions
Although American, European and Egyptian tourism boards still have trouble admitting the ethnicities of Ancient Egypt or more accurately Kemet, just like their adherence to a name the Greeks called the denizens of Egypt Or "The People with the Burnt Cork Faces" (Egyptian) and not what the people called themselves "Black Peoples Land/ Land of the Black People" (Kemet) let it not be said that there was an Egyptologist who let truth get in the way of profits.
To put it simply Ancient Egypt was Black, Brown and African just like the Ancient America's was Brown, Red and Native in the last centuries of the pharaohs influence foreign presence took over the royal houses and thus we have a half Greek Cleopatra and in turn the Nubians (where Egypt learned to build their pyramids from), Hyksos, Arabs, etc each at one time or another assumed the mantle of Kemetan Leadership but the religion, culture, clothing, architecture, arts, sciences and greatness of Egyptian antiquity is wholly African.
It is not some mystical floating land mass between two continents created by the digging of a canal. This will cause great consternation but then simple truths often do.
This preface is just to let you know if you see the depiction of Tut as a Caucasian despite the fact both his parents were melanated Africans its just proof we still have a long way to go when it comes to historical truths. Race in America was socially constructed —based on white supremacy— and historical narratives cannot exist here without the creation of a racial hierarchy that marginalizes communities of color. Its how our educational system was designed and so it will take many years to fix it and deprogram the masses. Who for instance, took the real life Black western hero Bass Reeves, one who rode with natives spoke their languages, and caught or killed over 3000 outlaws thus inspiring the creation of the black masked avenger. The Lone Ranger! A system that forced 60's counter culture cult fave "Kato the ultimate Kung Fu fighter" epitomized by Sifu Bruce Lee to play second fiddle chauffer to a white guy dressed as a green bug! Yet the question never posed... "How come the Green Hornet couldn't drive himself?"
But this kind of disjointed thinking is not only prevalent in the America's, Zahi Hawass, the head of Egyptian Antiquities and a TV personality, declared famously that "Tutankhamun was not black, and "Egyptians are not Arabs and are not Africans (Note: Egypt is in Africa),"according to Hawass neither are they Asian or European. Confused yet? Be that as it may, in ancient Egypt/Kemet as a whole, people were not designated by color terms, and slavery was not associated with darker skin, in fact the slaves of ancient Egypt's were basically prisoners of War few were Nubian because Nubians were mercenaries that frequently fought side by side with Egypt as their archers were renown for their skill. Most slaves were Mamluks who were slaves of Turkic origin from the Eurasian Steppe, but the institution of military slavery spread to include Circassians, Abkhazians, Georgians, Armenians, and Russians, as well as peoples from the Balkans such as Albanians, Greeks, and South Slavs which is why Slav and slave became almost interchangeable it is the etymology of the word.
The battle for the ethnicity of the Ancient Egyptians to be declared as Caucasians arose from Civil War American scholars. In the interest of profit these men desperately wanted to justify chattel slavery. Racial science theories were utilized to discredit the idea of Africans possessing the ability to form a civilization, read, comprehend science and art despite the fact Africans had brought Europe out of the dark ages twice. First with the education of the Greeks leading to the age of philosophy, mathematics etc. (the pantheon of Gods and even Egyptian fashion was lauded by the Greeks) and secondly with the arrival and rule of the Moors in Spain for over 650 years that led to the Renaissance.
The rise of Western imperialism coincided with the 1922 discovery of King Tutankhamun’s tomb it tied politics and Egyptian history more closely together than had ever been seen. This connection created a historiography that utilized Egyptian history to promote European ideals of imperialism, always at the expense of the native peoples. This message naturally created a backlash within the African American community that would reach its height during the turmoil of the Civil Rights movement. Nevertheless, don't let this information keep you from enjoying an event that started July 8th and will continue until until October 2, 2022 at SoWa Power Station in Boston MA. on Harrison Avenue.
