A Quick Guide to Add Years of Efficiency to Your Air Conditioner

Every year you will find Air conditioners on the street that people have thrown away or you will hear of friends and family who spent their hard earned cash buying new AC units. If you see black spots or black dust appearing around air vents, there's a good chance that mold is growing inside. These black spots are usually difficult to wipe off, and if it has a wet, slimy texture, that's another indication of black mold in that case it will be necessary to open up the unit and do a full cleaning. In less than an hour you can have your AC running like new because one of the best kept secrets is that routine maintenance of the vents and filters of an air conditioner that you can do at home for pennies, will add years to the life of your air conditioner. Here are some tips on how you can stay cool. when the heat is on and poppin’!

  1. Turn Off the Power and unplug the Air Conditioner.

  2. Open Up the AC Unit.

  3. Clean the Air Conditioner Evaporator Coils. use the vacuum with the soft brush attachment, and carefully vacuum out any dust balls or other stuff you see in the unit. Then, mix together your water and two drops of dish detergent. Next, spray this inside the machine and wipe the areas down.

  4. Clean the AC Drain Pan.

  5. Clear the Air Conditioner Drain If It Is Plugged. You can use bleach as an excellent choice to clean a window air conditioner since it destroys mold.

  6. Close the AC Access Panel.

  7. Disconnect and Remove AC Grille.

  8. Remove Debris in the Air Conditioner.

  9. If you decide not to buy a new filter…Mix up a one-to-one solution of vinegar and water, and add it to a spray bottle. Spray both sides of the filter, and give it 10 minutes for the solution to kill bacteria. Rinse the filter under running water before continuing.

  10. AC filters need to air dry, and it can take several hours to become completely free of moisture. To aid in the process, you can put newspapers on the ground underneath the filter. Lean the filter up against the wall on top of the newspapers. Once a minimum of three hours have passed, you can re-install the filter in your air conditioning unit. Do this once a year and spray the condenser coils with a vent cleaner every 6 months.
