September is a season of transformation — a time to gather what we’ve grown, celebrate the harvest, and prepare the soil for what’s next. Across Boston, community members are honoring this season by coming together to share knowledge, food, and the joy of growing locally.

One of the best ways to join in the celebration this month is by attending the Urban Agriculture Fair, a vibrant community event that highlights the power of urban farming and neighborhood collaboration.

🌱 Urban Agriculture Fair 2025

📅 Date & Time: Saturday, September 20, 11 AM – 3 PM

📍 Location: Roxbury Heritage Park, 183 Roxbury Street

💡 Admission: Free and open to everyone

Hosted by GrowBoston, the City of Boston’s Office of Urban Agriculture, the fair brings together partners like The Trustees, Dorchester Food Co-op, and the Agricultural Hall Urban Farm Supply & Resource Center to share resources, celebrate the harvest, and inspire new growers.

The fair will feature:

  • Fresh produce from local farms

  • A lively harvest competition with a cash prize

  • Cooking demonstrations and gardening workshops

  • Kid-friendly activities and interactive learning stations

  • Bees, chickens, and pigeons up close

  • Live steel drum music to set the tone

  • Free food provided by Fresh Food Generation

Whether you’re an experienced gardener or just starting out, this event is the perfect way to connect, learn, and celebrate the season of abundance.

🍂 Fall Planting Guide: What to Grow Now

As the weather cools, it’s the perfect time to plant crops that thrive in autumn. Here are a few to consider for your garden, raised bed, or balcony containers:

  • Leafy Greens: Kale, collards, mustard greens, spinach, and lettuce

  • Root Vegetables: Radishes, beets, carrots, and turnips

  • Garlic: Plant now for a plentiful spring harvest

  • Cover Crops: Rye or clover to enrich your soil for next season

Pro Tip: Refresh your soil with compost or natural fertilizers before planting to give your fall crops the nutrients they need to thrive. For tools, seeds, and expert guidance, visit the Agricultural Hall Urban Farm Supply & Resource Center or explore workshops offered by The Trustees.

🤝 Growing Together

This celebration is made possible by the collective efforts of organizations and community members working together to strengthen Boston’s local food system:

Together, these partnerships make it easier for every Boston resident to access the knowledge and resources needed to grow fresh, healthy food right where they live.

🌻 Planting for the Future

This September, take time to celebrate what has grown — in your garden, your neighborhood, and your community. Attend the Urban Agriculture Fair, try planting something new, and share your journey with neighbors.

Each seed planted is more than food — it’s a step toward resilience, connection, and a healthier future for all.
