Although darkly-pigmented skin absorbs about 30 to 40% more sunlight than lightly-pigmented skin, dark skin does not increase the body's internal heat intake in conditions of intense solar radiation. Melanin provides darker skin tones with a natural layer of protection. This layer of protection makes sunburns rare, but it does not completely block UV damage. In recent experiments green light conversion to heat was highly correlated to the number of melanosomes, whereas blue light conversion to heat was less correlated, which may be because the reddish melanosomes it contains are less effective in absorbing energy from the blue spectrum of light. This shows the metals accumulation in the melanin can be easily visualized with TEM. And confirms that the amount of melanin granules in human hair defines the conversion to heat of light energy in the visible spectrum.
Whites, Blacks, all pigments in between and even albinos have the same distribution of melanocytes. Racial skin color differences are not due to differences in the number of melanocytes, but to the type (Eumelanin, Pheomelanin) amount and density of melanin manufactured within them.
